Costs vary significantly by country.

  • In Germany, public universities charge no tuition for most programs, though you pay a semester fee of €150–350 covering public transit and administrative costs.
  • Norway offers tuition-free education at public universities, including for international students.
  • Other countries like the Netherlands or Sweden offer free education to EU students, and charge €8,000–12,000 annually for non-EU students.

Can I study STEM for free in Europe?

Yes.

Germany and Norway stand out as top destinations for tuition-free STEM education. German public universities eliminated tuition for all students, regardless of nationality, in 2014. Norway maintains the same policy at all public institutions.

Can I get permanent residence (PR) if I study STEM in Europe?

Studying abroad on its own does not grant PR, but it can count as a structured pathway into visas that can lead to PR.

Most European countries provide pathways from student visa to permanent residence and they actively seek STEM talent and have streamlined processes for qualified graduates.

What are the requirements to study STEM in Europe?

You'll need a:

  • Recognized high school diploma (for Bachelor's programs) or Bachelor's degree (for Master's programs)
  • Proof of language proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, Goethe diploma...)
  • Proof of funds. Each country has its own requirements, but it's usually around 1,000-1,500 euros a month.
  • Some schools require you to have taken subjects in mathematics, physics, or related areas.
